The Lord of the Rings is a tale of Power of course, symbolised by the Rings : "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." This ring overpowers the Mighty, no one is safe from its influence to the dark side. There is one character though that the Ring has no power over: Tom Bombadil! It seems he had a kind of freedom from possession by Power that no-one else did. What are the conditions for the freedom? Is it desirable? Cheers
Thanks Johannes, Samwise does seem "inoculated" in some way. Various comments are made about this (only wore it for a short time etc., too stupid...) Whether he has the freedom that Tom does is another question. Tom plays with the Ring, it's a toy for him. "Outsider" yes, but able to join others. Reminds me a bit of Don Juan in Carlos Castenada books. Cheers,

Being nearly entirely on the outside then it seems might be the condition.
What about Samwise Gamgee though? Is he not also free from the influence of the One Ring?
